60 Best Tottenham Hotspur Players In Premier League History

25. Nicky Barmby

Main Position: Attacking Midfielder. Time With Spurs: 1992-1995. A product of Spurs' youth academy, Barmby made 110 appearances for Spurs. A goalscoring attacking midfielder, the boy from Hull scored 28 goals for the club, 21 of which came in the Premier League. His debut came in September of 1992, in the maiden season of the Premier League. He wa only 18 years of age, but he established himself as a first team player that same season. Barmby left for Middlesbrough for £5.25m in 1995 - the same year he made his England debut. He went on to earn 23 caps, scoring 4 goals. Barmby subsequently played for Everton, Liverpool, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest and Hull City who he also managed until 2012. Now 39 years old, he coaches a local junior team and his son Jack plays for Manchester United.

24. Gus Poyet

Main Position: Attacking Midfielder. Time With Spurs: 2001-2004. Uruguay international Gus Poyet joined Spurs in 2001 after a highly successful spell at Chelsea, costing the White Hart Lane club £2.2m, and saw out his career with the club. In his time at Spurs, despite being struck down by a number of injuries, he scored 23 goals in 98 games and was Tottenham's top scorer in one season despite playing in midfield. Poyet was part of the team that lost 2-1 against Blackburn Rovers in the 2002 League Cup final. After leaving Spurs and retiring from playing, Poyet took up a career in coaching. He was Dennis Wise's assistant manager at both Swindon Town and Leeds United. He also returned to Spurs as part of Juande Ramos' coaching team. He got his first management job with Brighton and Hove Albion in 2009 and, now 45 years old, he has remained in that position ever since.

23. Gary Mabbutt

Main Position: Central Defender. Time With Spurs: 1982-1998. A true Tottenham Hotspur legend, Mabbutt made no less than 626 appearances for the club, scoring 37 times. Having arrived at the club way back in 1982 in a £105,000 deal from Bristol Rovers, Mabbutt would be positioned higher in an all-time Spurs players list, but he was sadly past his best once the Premier League era arrived. In his time at White Hart Lane, Mabbutt won the 1984 UEFA Cup final against Anderlecht and captained the club to a 2-1 FA Cup Final victory against Nottingham Forest in 1991. He was also part of the losing FA Cup final team in 1987, in which he scored at both ends - including the unfortunate winning goal for opposing team Coventry City in extra time. During the early Premier League years, Mabbutt was part of a Tottenham team that struggled and leaked goals quite prolifically, but he remained 100% committed to the Spurs cause and was always a model professional. Amazingly, Mabbutt's excellent professsional career came despite the fact he has type 1 diabetes. He famously played in the Premier League with a protective face mask, following an elbow by John Fashanu which fractured Mabbutt's skull. Having suffered a career-threatening broken leg the previous season, Mabbutt played his final game for the club against Southampton in the last game of the 1997-1998 season before retiring. He earned 16 England caps, scoring for his country once.

22. Younes Kaboul

Main Position: Central Defender. Time With Spurs: 2007-2008, 2010-Present. Following a disappointing first spell with the club, having signed from Auxerre for around £8m, French centre back Younes Kaboul joined Portsmouth for £6m. In 2010, having regained his reputation with a series of impressive performances for Pompey, Spurs re-signed the Frenchman for an undisclosed fee and he has been one of their stand-out centre backs ever since. With 74 appearances in his second spell (103 including his first spell), Kaboul has emerged as one of the Premier League's top performing defenders. Having missed most of the 2012-2013 season due to injury, both he and the fans are eager to get back in to the team. A partnership with Jan Vertonghen is something that could be quite great. Kaboul came on as a substitute in Spurs' 2008 League Cup final win against Chelsea, played a key part in their 2010-2011 Champions League campaign, and has earned 5 caps for France, scoring once for them on his debut against Ukraine.

21. Christian Ziege

Main Position: Left Back. Time With Spurs: 2001-2004. Following spells at Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Middlesbrough and Liverpool, German international left back Christian Ziege signed for Spurs for a fee of £4m and is still the best left back they've had, in terms of ability, since the Premier League began. Making 55 appearances for the club during his 3 year stay, Ziege - a renowned dead-ball specialist - scored 10 goals. His most famous goal came in the 2002 League Cup final against Blackburn Rovers, but it wasn't enough to prevent Spurs losing 2-1 to Blackburn Rovers. In 2004, Ziege left Spurs by mutual consent, having become increasingly injury prone, and promptly returned to his native Germany with Borussia Mönchengladbach. He only made a handful of appearances in his first 6 months with the club before getting injured again in December. He would never play again and retired 10 months later in October 2005. Since then, Ziege had various different coaching roles with Borussia Mönchengladbach. He then managed Arminia Bielefeld and the Germany Under 19 team for a short while. Now 41 years old, he has been the coach of the Germany Under 18 team since 2011.
