Generally speaking, Rangers don't do a lot of good transfer business these days. Whilst it could be argued that convincing Steven Gerrard to take his first proper plunge into club management was smart in itself, it's also a bit of a risk.

The midfielder they've just snatched from Burnley isn't.

Anyone who watches the Gers regularly could tell you that the defending at Ibrox is a problem. Look beyond that glaring deficiency though and the midfield engine room is similarly lacking; teams just get through on goal too easily, and we're not talking good teams either.

That's what makes Arfield, a free transfer from Sean Dyche's Premier League workhorses, so impressive.

After agreeing a four-year contract with the Scottish club, Arfield can look back on five solid years in the Burnley midfield. He's the kind of slick passer (and, more crucially, tough tackler) that Rangers have been missing. It's actually a slight surprise that Dyche let the Canadian international leave for nothing.
