Pop quiz: how much does it cost to buy in a seasoned Swiss international who has won seven consecutive Serie A titles with Juventus, five Coppa Italia trophies (four with Juve, one with Lazio) and four Italian Super Cups during a success-laden decade in Italian football?

If you're Unai Emery's Arsenal, the answer is nothing.

Though the press did lay it on thick yesterday that Stephan Lichtsteiner was Emery's first official signing as Gunners boss, they didn't make enough of the fact it was a free transfer. The attack-minded defender's contract with Juventus had elapsed, and that meant Emery was free (literally) to pursue him.

At 34, it's true that Lightsteiner's best days are behind him. Nonetheless, he's an experienced winner who will surely help the faltering Arsenal backline in the coming season. If Emery needs him to, Lightsteiner can also play on the right wing as an attacker, and he's not shy about tracking back when filling that position.

This is one of the summer's most under-rated deals.
