8 Big Modern Formula 1 Crashes

7. Most Of The Field €“ Belgium 1998

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmOhDtgsPjc At the start of the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix, in heavy wet conditions, after getting through the first turn everything went to pieces behind the leaders, with over half the field being caught up in a massive accident that emerged dramatically from the mist hanging over the track. Carnage ensued as people came together, leaving the track strewn with debris and the red flag was immediately brought out. Despite this being back in the days of spare cars, four drivers were left without a car for the restart, which occurred almost an hour later due to the length of the clean up. The excitement wasn€™t over however, as on the restart Hakkinen spun off, and later Michael Schumacher smashed into the back of Coulthard€™s McLaren whilst leading comfortably when they came together in the spray. Implications The events unfolded to allow Jordan to take their first race win, with Damon Hill leading home rookie Ralf Schumacher in the striking yellow cars. As a Damon Hill fan, it was great for me personally to see his first win since his world championship win at Suzuka in 1996. Overall, this served to show how big and bad Formula 1 accidents can get if things go wrong in just the right way.
