If it weren't for injuries, there's a strong chance Jonathan Woodgate would go down as one of England's most decorated defenders. The sublime centre-back was an expert reader of the game, and as comfortable with the ball at his feet as he was halting opposing strikers, but fitness issues started strangling his career in 2000/01, and haunted him for the duration.

Woodgate signed for Newcastle in January 2003, having been sold as part of Leeds United's attempts at staving off administration. Though he grew up in Middlesbrough, the England international outed himself as an NUFC supporter upon signing, and soon became a fan favourite. Unfortunately, injuries continued to limit his appearances, and Woodgate played just 37 times in his 18 months on Tyneside.

When he did make it to the pitch, however, Woodgate was sublime. His performances were so strong that Real Madrid paid £13.4 million for his services in 2004, though he didn't make a single appearance in his first season. He eventually returned to the North East with Boro in 2006, sparking something of a career revival and a return to the English national setup, and retired 10 years later.
