Brendan Rodgers' side struggled massively in the Champions League last year, crashing out in the group stages with a third place finish, sending the Reds into the Europa League where they were knocked out by Besiktas. They also struggled with League form, failing to keep up with the top four and eventually missing out on a spot by eight points.

With another pre-season preparing for the Europa League under way, Reds fans will be hoping the squad has some quality players added, with some slightly questionable signings already through the door. The five time Champions League winners have already added the likes of Nathaniel Clyne, James Milner and Danny Ings to their ranks, but none of them have really got the Kop pulses racing. However, with the news that Liverpool may be about to meet Aston Villa striker, Christian Benteke's, release clause, optimism may be high on Merseyside.

The Anfield side will have plenty of competition for a Champions League place in the Premier League, but will need to spend their money wisely, something Liverpool are guilty of failing to do in recent seasons. Maybe the best chance they have is to win the Europa League? 'Easier said' and all that.
