8 Football Teams Who Were Stripped Of Their League Titles
1. Juventus - Serie A, 2004-05 & 2005-06
The biggest match-fixing crisis in modern football, 2006's "calciopoli" scandal encompassed teams and officials from all levels of the game in Italy and had far reaching consequences.
The scandal had many complex strands, but a major element of it involved wire taps that revealed Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi had been able to manipulate and control referees to rule in favour of Juve and against their rivals.
With the effects of the manipulation of referees covering countless games over a lengthy period, the punishments were severe. Moggi was given a lifetime ban from football, Juventus were relegated to Serie B, and their previous two league titles were stripped from their record.
The Old Lady have never been happy to accept the ruling, though, despite copious evidence of corruption. Their 28th official Scudetto title was celebrated in 2012 with banners celebrating a "30th" win, while their shirts for the following season proclaimed "30 on the pitch."
What really invokes their ire, however, is that the 2005-06 title was awarded to runners up Inter, rather than just being left unassigned. The Bianconeri have appealed an astonishing 30 times, not to get their 2005-06 title restored, just to get it taken away from Inter as well, but they have yet to be successful in this.
With it taking a calciopoli level of massive corruption before a club is stripped of a league title, Manchester City's financial irregularities just don't really seem in the same ball park. But what do you think? Should City receive the same level of punishment as 90s Marseille or 2006 Juventus? Comment below to let us know.
