8 Frank Lampard Goals Chelsea Fans Will Never Forget
3. Chelsea 4 Bayern Munich 2, Stamford Bridge: April 6, 2005
The second of Lampards goals against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter final illustrated the kind of skill and technique that is more often associated with the likes of France legend Zinedine Zidane. Much like the former Real Madrid midfielders famous volley in the 2002 Champions League Final, Lampard produced a strike worthy of winning any competition. A pass from Frenchman Claude Makelele back into the box after a poor clearance from the Munich defence saw Lampard bring the ball down while in mid-air on his chest, turn, and volley the ball across the face of the goal with his left foot. It was an inspirational game from Lampard, who led the side in the absence of Jose Mourinho who was serving a two game suspension. His two goals insured that not only were fans treated to one of the best Champions League goals in recent memory, but that Chelsea saw off the challenge of one of Europe's deadliest clubs in Bayern Munich. It would prove to be typical of the level of performance from the England man, providing a constant threat to any defence in the world at the time. It was a year where he featured in the World XI and came second only to Ronaldinho in FIFAs World Player of the Year awards adding to his long list achievements. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZvAxt1Mvmw
