8 Times Animals Invaded Formula 1
3. Deer - Austria (2001)
The Austrian Grand Prix, held in the shadow of the Styrian Mountains, encourages animals to bring their game faces to the race weekend. In 2001, during the Final Practice session before Qualifying, Williams driver Juan Pablo Montoya had to back off during a flying lap after a deer found its way onto the circuit. Montoya saw the funny side and joked with his team over the radio, who initially didn't quite get the joke. The deer eventually left via a trackside barrier.
Montoya qualified on the front row for the race but had to retire after losing hydraulic pressure. His teammate David Coulthard won the race. The Colombian won seven races during his career, and until 2018 held the record for the fastest ever qualifying lap in Formula One history.
