2. Concentrating On The Future
This has been Arsene Wenger's plan from day one: buy cheap and develop the players the club needs to built for a brighter future. And in all honestly, there has been a lot of success with this tactic, with Cesc Fabregas being a prime example - snapped up by Arsenal as a 16 year old and nurtured into one of the best in the world. And best of all for the Arsenal coffers, but perhaps not the fans, after Barcelona realised their mistake, they had to cough up a huge fee to take him back to the Camp Nou. Fabregas isn't the only one - midfielders Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere are two more examples along with defender Carl Jenkinson, all of whom were signed with one eye firmly on the future. This is all very nice for the future, but these players won't hang around at Arsenal, just like their predecessors, if they don't have a silverware winning team in the present. Wenger needs to start buying well-established players if he's to dig Arsenal out of this current situation, and admittedly the signs are there that he is willing to change his approach: Lucas Podolski is an established and decorated player, although his form has not been as expected while mainly playing out wide and struggling to score goals. But this should not put off Arsene with future similar deals, with rumours he might be given a bumper transfer kitty in the Summer (if he's still in charge).
