Arsenal Best XI From Arsene Wenger's 1,000 Games

CM. Patrick Vieira

Patrick Vieira arrived at Arsenal at the same time as Arsene Wenger and he stated that was the reason he was joining. For the next nine years, Vieira became a cult hero and one of the best captains the club has ever had. He's well remembered for his bust-ups with Manchester United's Roy Keane, a feud that goes down as the greatest in Premier League history. At Arsenal, Vieira won two doubles, captained the unbeaten side in 2004 and won four FA Cups. His last kick in an Arsenal jersey was to score the winning penalty in the 2005 FA Cup final against Manchester United- the last time the North London club won a trophy. When Tony Adams retired in 2002, Vieira took over as club captain and held the position until he departed for Juventus in 2005. Previously, he had turned down Spanish giants Real Madrid and attracted the interest of Manchester United. When he did leave it was the right time and became a key part of the development and progression of a young Cesc Fabregas. Vieira will always be a legend at Arsenal and he will not be forgotten. Since the departure of Vieira, Arsenal have failed to find a captain with the passion, ability and determination to succeed that Vieira had. The impact that Vieira had in the middle of the park has been missed by Arsenal ever since.
