Arsenal In Talks To Buy Per Mertesacker & Andre Santos

Having seen his severely depleted side crumble in horrific fashion against Manchester United over the weekend, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is desperately looking, finally with some intent, to strengthen his squad just over 24 hours before the transfer window shuts. talkSPORT radio claim Werder Bremen and German international defender Per Mertesacker is in talks with the Gunners over a move to the Premier League, with a deal for Brazilian & Fenerbache left-back Andre Santos also at an advanced stage. The latter's deal looks slightly more closer to completion than the big centre half but it's understood Wenger desperately wants both players to slot straight into his first team for the rest of the season. Santos would be a replacement for the long-gone Gael Clichy (now at Man City) and Mertesacker, a long admired player in the French manager's eyes, is seemingly that centre half which critics of Arsenal's lackluster defence have forever suggested Wenger needs. We know he was trying to convince Bolton to sell Gary Cahill for £6 million last week... it's understood the deal for Mertesacker will be more but Wenger clearly thinks he is worth spending the extra cash on that he wouldn't on the Premiership defender.
