Arsenal Transfers: 10 Flops Wenger Should Always Regret

3. Marouane Chamakh

Sure, Marouane Chamakh was a free transfer but he is also on £60,000 a week. His spell at Arsenal has, hitherto, been a disastrous one and he spent the last campaign at West Ham, where he spent more time on the bench than a pensioner in a park. He played just three games for the Hammers and failed to scored in a loan spell that Arsene hoped would bring back the confidence he showed during his time at Bordeaux. After a first season under Arsene Wenger in which he played 29 league games and scored on 7 occasions, his next season was a far less frequent one. Appearing just 11 times and netting just once, Chamakh admitted that he may have "lost his edge" thus leading to a loan spell at West Ham the following season - which, as mentioned, proved to be an unsuccessful one. Though it can be said that he cost the club nothing, hence why he can't be deemed as a bad signing, the £60k a week Chamakh earns to sit on a bench and do some warm-up stretches shows that this was a misjudged signing by the Arsenal gaffer. It is unlikely that Marouane will stick around much longer and a move back to France may be on the horizon. Arsenal may not get a lot for him, but it'll be a nice amount to get off the wage bill which could be spent on someone with better prolificacy. Transfer fee: Free transfer.
