Arsenal Transfers: 5 Errors Wenger Made On Deadline Day

4. Missing Out On Alessio Cerci

Arsene Wenger could have sold Podolski this summer and made an offer for Alessio Cerci as his replacement, but instead Arsenal let the prolific forward slip through their net on deadline day as Cerci moved to Atletico Madrid. The Gunners were heavily linked with the former Torino man this summer but Wenger's dithering ultimately meant they lost out on their man. Cerci would have been a fantastic signing - he scored 13 Serie A goals last season and has even been compared to Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben. He can also play on the wing meaning he would have been able to fill in for the injured Theo Walcott while he can operate as a second striker, making him a good replacement for Giroud, also. But instead of pushing for the deal, Wenger was reportedly managing a charity match in Rome, ironically while Atletico were putting the finishing touches on the purchase of the Italy international. The Gunners boss should have been at Emirates Stadium dialling away on the phone trying to push deals through, but instead missed out on the next Robben - and Cerci isn't the only player Arsenal missed out on due to the Frenchman's jaunt.
