Arsenal Transfers: 5 Players Arsene Wenger Could Have Signed But Didn't

3. Mohammed Diame

Late last night, as the final moments of the January transfer window ebbed away, it looked as though Arsene Wenger was about to sign West Ham midfielder Mohammed Diame after a "mystery club" activated his £3.5 million release clause. With London rivals Tottenham also interested, nobody quite knew which of the two Premier League rivals activated the heavily-reported clause, though it later transpired that it was Arsenal. For some reason unknown, Diame didn't make the move to the Emirates after the deal apparently collapsed in the eleventh hour. The Frenchman would have been perfect at Arsenal though - his transfer fee was exceptionally low, which panders to Wenger's inability (or point-blank refusal) to spend vast swathes of money, and he would have added the steel and composure that Arsenal's midfield is so desperately lacking.
