Arsenal Transfers: 5 Players Arsene Wenger Could Have Signed But Didn't

1. David Villa

Villa Barcelona's David Villa became the subject of one of the most protracted, drawn out, "will-he-won't-he" transfer sagas of the January window, and at one point, it seemed as though the move was possible. The Catalans had always insisted that the striker would not be allowed to leave mid-season despite the Spaniard becoming a fringe player at the Nou Camp. Then, an apparent breakthrough. Official talks were opened between Arsenal and Barca chiefs over a potential move, prompting speculation that Wenger was about to land himself a much needed striker.* But then disappointment. The move fell through when it became apparent the La Liga leaders were simply unprepared to sell and were not reciprocal to a deal.** Arsenal really could have used a new forward - Marouane Chamakh has been sent out on-loan, Gervinho is still contesting the African Cup of Nations and Podolski can blow hot and cold. In the end, it seems as though the Gunners are going to have to rely on Theo Walcott to bang in the goals for them until the summer.
