This window will be remembered as the one where Arsenal came a whisker away from signing Germanys brightest prospect but fell at the final hurdle. It was almost a week between Arsenal made their approach and the closure of the transfer window. Everything looked perfect but then tragic news emerged as Arsenal missed out. The club is likely to visit the situation again in the Summer but by then it may be too late- as the big names in Europe may swoop. A million reasons have emerged as to why Arsenal ultimately failed. Some say Bayern Munich stepped in, others say Schalke blocked the deal last minute while others suggest Wenger wasn't prepared to meet the buyout clause. The fact of the matter is with days to complete the signing they should've finalised a deal with plenty of time remaining. They let the deal drag on and on, they paid the price in the end. A bidding war will probably start in the Summer so Arsenal will have to fork out more to grab the starlet but theres also the possibility that he'll end up elsewhere. Then it'll be a case of the one that got away. The age old tale of the big fish you hooked and came so close to reeling in.
