After selling Demba Ba to Chelsea, Newcastle look a little light up front on paper.

Papiss Cissé is misfiring and looks like he could turn in to a flash-in-the pan after a stunning first season at the club, Yoan Gouffran looks promising but is still relatively unproven in the Premier League, and Shola Ameobi has never really shown the kind of consistent quality that the Toon look for in their centre forwards, so they could do worse than taking a look at Benteke.

However, whether the Belgian would consider a move like this to be anything other than a sideways step remains to be seen. Regardless of their progress since relegation, and the quality in the current Newcastle squad, they remain perilously close to the relegation zone themselves, and Benteke might well look higher up the league for his "next step." Nevertheless, Benteke is the kind of striker Newcastle should be looking at to replace the departed Ba, and a substantial bid at the end of the season isn't completely out of the question given their recent transfer activity.
