4. Alan Shearer
Alan Shearer, like Kenny Dalglish, enjoyed success at Blackburn Rovers too in the mid nineties before moving on to pastures new. His 34 goals in the 1994-95 season helped secure the Premier League for Rovers and in spite of moving to Newcastle United one season later, he is still regarded as a legend at Ewood Park. The last time one of his former sides found themselves in difficulty, he stepped into the breech as manager to lend a helping hand. He became Newcastle manager in April 2009 for the final eight games of the Premier League as the Magpies fought desperately to stave off relegation. His first win as a manager came against Middlesbrough and it was one that gave Newcastle fans the faintest whiff of hope as it lifted them out of the relegation zone, though Shearer could not save his side from relegation in the end. Shearer hasn't managed a club since, and is a regular panelist on TV's Match of the Day, so it is perhaps unlikely that he will take the vacant position at Ewood, but in a sport where virtually nothing is certain, you never quite can tell.
