Chelsea Transfers: 5 Reasons Why Blues Are Right To Get Rid Of Frank Lampard

3. Age

As old as it may make many of you feel, the fact that Lampard is now 34 years of age cannot be ignored. Abramovich is clearly trying to model his side around a new crop of younger players, designed to give him the free-flowing football he craves and therefore handing out contract extensions to players who are coming to the end their careers makes little sense. Some have been quick to draw comparisons between Manchester United€™s continued use of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs and Chelsea€™s reluctance to offer Lampard a new deal, but the fact remains that they are completely different players. Scholes and Giggs have shown phenomenal adaptability and longevity to continue operating at such a high level; however this is no guarantee that the Chelsea veteran will do the same. Both Scholes and Giggs are cleverer players than Lampard who have adapted their games to allow for an increasing lack of pace and so far there is little evidence of him doing the same.
