Chelsea Transfers: Rating Mourinho's 10 Biggest Deals Of The Summer
5. Filipe Luis - BOUGHT
The departure of Ashley Cole and David Luiz left Chelsea in desperate need of defensive reinforcements and while a new centre-back certainly wouldn't go amiss - Kurt Zouma, finally arriving at the club from St Etienne after signing in January, has not looked quite up to speed in his pre-season outings despite his huge potential - the acquisition of Filipe Luis, again from Atletico, offers Chelsea a more attacking alternative to the defensive rock that is Cesar Azpilicueta, who held down the position for most of last season. Luis is one of those unsung talents who has been at the top of his game for a while, making it all the more baffling that Scolari overlooked him in favour of the wildly unpredictable Marcelo for the Brazil squad at the World Cup this summer. He's very reliable defensively, but his most essential attribute is his ability to ping accurate crosses into the box from deep. He may have to curb his attacking instincts slightly to account for a lack of protection from Eden Hazard, but with Costa should provide a perfect target for him to pick out on his many forays forward. Mourinho has hinted that Azpilicueta will be the first choice left-back for games where greater caution is needed, but Luis will be a terrific weapon for the manager to use whether playing him from the start or bringing him off the bench to add a different facet to his team's attacking play. The downside is that Luis is already 29 years old, which means that given his style of play, he probably won't be able to continue at his peak for more than three or four more years at most. £15.8 million is a hefty outlay for a player so close to 30, yet also speaks for quite how much confidence Mourinho has in him to make an impact. A world class talent lacking only a world class reputation, Luis won't be one for the long term but should prove an important asset in the here and now. Rating: 7/10
