Chelsea Transfers: Rating Mourinho's 10 Biggest Deals Of The Summer
3. Didier Drogba - RE-SIGNED
As a Chelsea fan, it's near impossible not to be thrilled at the sight of the great Didier Drogba back in a Chelsea shirt, even if you know in your heart that he's not the player he once was. That penalty he scored in the shootout against Bayern Munich to take the Champions League trophy to Stamford Bridge was the perfect, most romantic possible time to leave, though even then there were signs of his age catching up with him. He scored a decent number of goals at Galatasaray and will be a terrific asset coming off the bench, if as much for just being Didier Drogba than any attacking contributions he may offer as well. There's a strong sense that The Drog was mostly signed with a view to having another veteran Chelsea man in the dressing room to complement John Terry, while also being able to do a little coaching work on the side. Certainly the prospect of Diego Costa being mentored by Didier Drogba is almost too thrilling to comprehend, but for the time being, the jury's out on whether Mourinho made the right choice in bringing in another veteran striker as backup, much as he did to mixed success with Samuel Eto'o. Beyond Costa, the Blues do feel a little short of quality backup, though a late volley against Burnley yesterday suggested Drogba still has plenty of fight left in him and he will know exactly how his manager wants him to play. It's obviously wonderful to have him back at the club and the fact he arrived on a free transfer made it all the sweeter, though there's a lingering doubt as to whether his signing may have rubber-stamped Romelu Lukaku's decision to leave or possibly stood in the way of a younger man coming in to provide Costa with more of a fight for the first team slot. Still, he's Drogba, he's Blue through and through even if he's not exactly new. And no, I won't apologise for the rhyme. Rating: 6/10
