The signing of Li Weifeng was an odd one to say the least, and he became another centre back that would only make a handful of appearances, two to be exact, before moving on to pastures new. When Everton signed a new sponsorship deal with Chinese telecommunications company Kejian in 2002, it was clear that the loan signings of Weifeng and fellow defender Li Tie were a thinly veiled attempt at promoting the clubs brand in China, with the Blues clearly trying to capitalise following the World Cup in South Korea and Japan. Weifeng made just two appearances for the Toffees, featuring in the Premier League against Southampton and the League Cup against Wrexham before a broken nose meant he returned to China over the Christmas period that year. He would fail to return to Merseyside, with then manager David Moyes stating that he had found it harder to settle in England than compatriot Li Tie and the defender later saying he had lost his confidence being on the bench and not playing for the first team. He has since played for a whole host of clubs in his homeland, his latest being Tianjin Teda where has played 92 times and scored three goals.
