Fresh off winning the Champions League with Real Madrid, claiming the man of the match award in the final no less, Angel Di Maria joined Manchester United for a then British record as the Red Devils looked to bounce back, following their awful season under David Moyes.

And it all started so promisingly, the Argentine scoring and assisting twice in his first four games for the club, including a goal of the season contender against Leicester City. But after picking up the United Player of the Month award for September, it all went horribly wrong.

Di Maria never settled in Manchester, both on the pitch and off it. Van Gaal continuously deployed him in different positions, playing him as either a left or right winger, attacking midfielder or even a striker. His house was burgled and an injury in October ended his good form, which he never recovered.

A red card in the FA Cup in March, pretty much signalled the end for Di Maria who left for Paris St. Germain at the end of the season, with United making a huge loss in the process.

A quality player who has won many accolades in his long career, it just didn’t work out for him in England.
