Fantasy Premier League Tips: 17 Best Opening Day Performances Analysed

6. Steven Whittaker (Norwich) - 11 points

Whittaker was in and out of the Norwich outfit last season, but his goal and an assist will certainly strengthen the case for the former Hibernian and Rangers man to continue in the role of full-back. He's also a steal at £4 million! Defensively, Norwich don't appear to offer much to a Fantasy Premier League manager, so proceed with caution here. It could have well been a particularly good first day out for the Scottish man, goalscoring chances could be at a premium for the defender going forward. Also, Sebastian Bassong, who's recovering from an injury, still has to come back into the team; Whittaker's place could be in question once the Cameroonian international returns.

5. Luke Shaw (Southampton) - 12 Points

The young defender is barely 18 years old, yet he made 25 appearances last year, and a clean sheet, an assist, and the 3 bonus for good measure made it a good start to 2012/13 for the youngster. He had no goal or assist last season, so it's safe enough to assume it was a rare event. He is pretty cheap at £4.5 million, but there are cheaper Southampton defenders out there (Calum Chambers at £4 million played 90 minutes for the Saints as well). He does seem destined to become a regular once more this season, so he may well be worth the outlay should the clean sheet trend hold up for the Southerners.
