In the beginning, it was more about physical power and the amount of heart a competitor had, However, once foreign players decided to leave the likes of Serie A (Italy), La Liga (Spain) and Ligue 1 (France) to try their luck in the Premier League both styles of play began to mesh together, creating a competition where technically superior players could play their game alongside those who weren't afraid to get in a battle on the pitch.
Many will say the Premier League is about sinking or swimming for players and managers. Most sink, submerged by the expectations and demands of what it is to be a top flight footballer in the toughest league in the world.
However, those who were able to swim became legends for their clubs, lifting a plethora of trophies and cementing their status as true greats. The hard part is picking out the best of the best; the players who over the last 22 seasons have stood out among everyone else for their skill, consistent performances and, most importantly, their winning mentality.
