Liverpools magical attacking football last season was a joy to watch, and they scored over 100 goals in the league. The only problem with this was that it masked some extremely average defending throughout the campaign. They let in 50 goals in their 38 games, which for a team challenging for the title, is very poor. They were conceding two or three goals fairly often, and their pathetic capitulation against Crystal Palace in May, in which they surrendered a three-goal lead, summed it all up. There is a nagging feeling with lots of Rodgers detractors that he simply doesnt take the defensive side of things seriously enough, and its clear to see why people think that. Liverpool have no defensive coach, which is surely a major error, and the general cohesion at the back has been embarrassing at times this season. Time and time again the Reds concede from set-pieces, with slack marking often the issue, and they also make far too many individual errors. Even little things like Coutinhos woeful tracking of Rooney last weekend have to be blamed on Rodgers. There is absolutely no way in a million years Mourinho would allow one of his midfielders to be so negligent of their defensive duties. At the moment, there seems to be no sign of Liverpool improving defensively, and that is all because of Rodgers. Even if Sakho and a new goalkeeper come into the side, it will only paper over the cracks. Until the Northern Irishman starts focusing on the defensive side of things as much as the attacking aspect, his side will continue to struggle. Hiring a defensive coach is paramount, for starters. Sami Hyypia would tick all the boxes, if he were to lose his job in charge of Brighton. Its the most important of all Rodgers things he must improve in 2015.
