Although performance-wise, this was not Gerrard’s best by any means, the sheer enormity of this achievement eclipses all others. The greatest Champions League final ever. Mastered by Rafa Benitez, executed by Steven Gerrard and co.

Gerrard’s contribution in the whirlwind eight-minute spell whereby Liverpool miraculously came back from three goals down against a supremely efficient AC Milan side was hugely important.

The AC Milan side on the night, which featured none other than the likes of Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Nesta, Andriy Shevchenko and Andrea Pirlo, was utterly overwhelmed by the sheer determination the Steven Gerrard-led Liverpool side shown when faced with a near-on impossible task.

His stunning headed goal to start the revival before winning the penalty with a lung-busting dart into the box to complete it provided Liverpool fans with moments to cherish for a lifetime. Moments like that made him a club hero for eternity, regardless of everything else he’s done at his time at the club.

Gerrard won the Champions League for the club that he’s supported all his life. Whatever else he may be mocked for by opposing fans, whatever disappointments he may have about career decisions, he will always have his Champions League medal.
