Liverpool Transfer News: Nicolas Gaitan £14 Million Bid Launched?

Liverpool are to launch an ambitious £14 million move for Benfica playmaker Nicolas Gaitan.

Record. The 24-year-old Argentine international has lit up the Estadio da Luz with two fine seasons at the club, last season almost helping the Lisbon side win the domestic title before Benfica dropped away from contention in the final weeks of the season. Liverpool are hoping that Gaitan fancies a move to the Premier League, perhaps feeling that he has achieved everything he can at Benfica and that the club are too far behind FC Porto to catch them next term. We imagine that new Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers is an admirer of Gaitan's ability to get goals and that was certainly a weakness that plagued Liverpool last season. Rodgers already tried to purchase his former Swansea loan star Gylfi Sigurdsson to plug the lack of goals problem but he opted to join Tottenham Hotspur from Hoffenheim instead of coming to Merseyside to link up with his former boss when Spurs offered him better wages. Rodgers has already secured the signing of striker Fabio Borini but is on the lookout for a creative talent in midfield. On paper, Gaitan looks to fit the bill. He has scored 13 times and delivered 25 assists in two years at Benfica, a contribution that at Anfield could help Liverpool get back into Champions League contention.
