Hyypia was a virtually unknown defender when Liverpool signed him in 1999 from Willem II and was a recommendation to former chief executive Peter Robinson from a TV cameraman. The Finland native supported the Reds as a child and secured his dream move for £2.6M. The centre-back turned out to be one of the club's greatest signings, giving Liverpool ten years of excellent service. He quickly formed a partnership with Stephan Henchoz and the pair became one of the most respected partnerships in England. Hyypia was a rock in defence winning most aerial challenges and made countless last ditch tackles for the Merseyside club. He was key to Liverpool's treble winning campaign of 2001, the FA Cup victory in 2006 and when Liverpool lifted the Champions League in 2005 - Hyypia's goal in the quarter final home leg against Juventus proved vital for the Reds to qualify to the next round. He will be remembered as one of Liverpool's most gifted centre-backs for his selfless performances and always giving 100%.
