1. Fernando Torres
The best piece of business Liverpool ever conducted in a transfer window was not any player they purchased. No, the sale of Fernando Torres to Chelsea for
the sum of £50 million will surely go down as one of the overpriced moves in transfer history not that this will bother the Reds as they used the funds to rebuild their side. To be fair in his prime Torres truly was a world class forward. Capable of scoring a goal from nothing and blessed with pace, fantastic finishing ability and a great goalscoring record the Spaniard set the Premier League alight during his first three seasons at Liverpool scoring 81 goals in his 142 appearances at the club. It may seem a little strange that selling one of their best players of the past few seasons is considered a great bit of business, but Torres form since his big money move has been nothing short of disastrous. It was clear that he was already declining during his final season at Anfield, but this was put down to the shortcomings of the team around him who struggled under new boss Roy Hodgson. Everyone felt sure that Torres would regain his magic touch over at Chelsea but it was not to be. He firstly struggled to displace Didier Drogba as the Blues main man up top with his frequent goal droughts interspersed with only a couple of flashes of the old Torres. Even when Drogba departed in the summer and El Nino was left as Chelseas only out and out senior striker he failed to impress. Although a record of 15 goals in 41 games for the season isnt all that bad its the manner of his lacklustre performances which have displeased the fans, and apparently manager, prompting Rafa Benitez to bring in Demba Ba from Newcastle during the January window. Torres has scored 27 goals in his 108 appearances for Chelsea. Liverpool will be over the moon that they managed to recoup such a large fee for fading star.
