2. Fernando Morientes
On the surface a fee of around
£6 million for a player with the reputation of Fernando Morientes doesnt seem like a bad deal. Liverpool were picking up a guy with a great record in La Liga who had spent seven seasons at Spanish giants Real Madrid and would seemingly be well suited to the English game. He was renowned for his ariel prowess, something Liverpool had lacked from their forwards at the time, and should have coped well with the physicality of the Premier League. Only it didnt quite pan out like that. Morientes scored 12 goals in his 61 games in England and although he was part of the squad which won the 2005 European Super Cup and 2006 FA Cup he never really had much of an impact on Rafa Benitezs team and was eventually shifted on to Valencia for just
£3 million 18 months later.
