"marquee signing" this summer and Coentrao would be precisely that. The Portuguese international has struggled at Real recently, and had to contest for a place in Jose Mourinho's starting XI last season alongside Marcelo and Arbeloa, whose continued presence limited the 25-year-old to just the 16 La Liga appearances last season. Like Assou-Ekotto, Coentrao could be tempted by a new challenge next season and, along with rivals Chelsea,
is on Liverpool's radar this summer. Deposed Premier League champions Manchester City are also reportedly interested in the £18 million-rated defender, meaning Liverpool would have plenty of competition should they follow through their interest with a serious bid this summer.
