Man City: 5 Reasons Pellegrini Won't Win The Quadruple

3. Drawing Barcelona In The Champions League

To even get to the quarter-finals of the Champions League at the expense of Barcelona would be an achievement, and even then, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich may still lie in wait. This is arguably the biggest obstacle of all as Man City go for that elusive quadruple. Gerardo Martino has kept Barcelona at the pinnacle of La Liga this season, as they lie top on goal difference from Atletico Madrid and three points clear of Real Madrid. Lionel Messi is also back firing, having been out with a hamstring injury for two months. His two goals to finish off Getafe sent Barcelona through to the last eight of the Copa del Rey, and as Messi regains his match fitness he will prove ever more dangerous for a Man City side who like to outscore their opponents rather than frustrate them. Could outscoring Barcelona, particularly over two legs, be a step too far? This is also Man City's first experience of the Champions League knock-out stage, after two unsuccessful attempts at getting out of their group. Could this lack of two-legged experience work against them? They have proven match-winning ability, as proven in the 3-2 victory at Bayern Munich, but even on that occasion, they were unaware that another goal would have seen them top their group. Barcelona is the exciting draw that all players will have dreamt of, but City's limitations at this level may be about to be exposed, although goals are guaranteed.
