1. Sunday 20th September 2009: Manchester United 4-3 Manchester City
This time 4 years ago, we had just witnessed what was possibly the most exhilarating Manchester Derby of all time. Sir Alex Ferguson hailed it as the best derby of all-time and it's number one in my list too. Michael Owen's goal epitomised the phrase 'Fergie Time' as his goal was officially recorded at 95 minutes 28 seconds, after the Fourth Official had signalled for just 4 minutes of added on time. Before Owen's goal, United had taken the lead on three separate occasions, only for City to peg them back time, after time (after time). United raced out of the blocks in the first half and were 1-0 up after just 2 minutes through Wayne Rooney after Patrice Evra's cutback. Ben Foster would then practically gift City their first equaliser in the 16th minute as he was robbed by Carlos Tevez who set up Gareth Barry for a finish that was harder than it looked, sending the sides in all square at the break. After half-time, United took another early lead through Darren Fletcher - who nodded in from Ryan Giggs' cross. But United were pegged back again, and this time round it took even less time for City to equalise. Just 3 minutes after Fletcher's goal, Bellamy angled in an unstoppable 25-yard drive. Another 25 minutes of constant United pressure to no avail prompted Ferguson to make an iconic substitution, hauling Dimitar Berbatov off for Michael Owen in the 77th minute. It took just 3 minutes for United to score, with the same two that combined for the second goal combining again for the third. Giggs' free-kick was met with a towering header from Fletcher, who looked to have finally secured the win for United. Craig Bellamy had other plans. Rio Ferdinand was careless in possession as his attempted chip over the head of Martin Petrov was intercepted by the Bulgarian who sent Craig Bellamy racing clear to slot past a poorly positioned Ben Foster to make the scores 3-3 after 90 minutes, prompting scenes of jubilation from City fans and players alike. However, it was United who had the last laugh. Ryan Giggs sent over a diagonal ball that was brought down and finished exquisitely by Michael Owen, for what was probably his best goal in a Manchester United shirt. The finish sent the Red side of Manchester wild and lives in the memory as possibly THE most exhilarating Manchester derby ever.
