Of all the players in this list, perhaps the weight of expectation rested heaviest on the shoulders of Memphis Depay. When he was drafted in by van Gaal last summer, it was hoped that the man with ‘Dreamchaser’ tattooed across his chest would follow in the footsteps of the pantheon of former greats to have worn the hallowed number seven shirt. So far, however, he has resembled more Di Maria than he has Ronaldo.

Having shone for PSV the previous campaign, finishing Eredivisie top scorer with 22 goals and with a league winners’ medal, the youngster’s mother was heard to be making noises about Real Madrid or Barcelona one day swooping for her talented son.

At the moment, he is struggling to get off the bench for a Europa League side, so let’s just put the predictions on hold for a minute. Man United fans need to see a massive upturn in fortunes for Depay if he is to carve out a future at Old Trafford.

Perhaps it’s a bit harsh to judge a player on just the one season, but the 22-year-old’s disastrous debut campaign - where he netted just two league goals - has seen him slide way down the pecking order. Perhaps a loan to a club overseas would see his confidence restored somewhat, maybe to Italy or Turkey?
