5. Alexander Büttner
Let's be honest with ourselves. The days of Patrice Evra being the undisputed first choice left-back at Manchester United are long over. At 32, the Frenchman has lost that crucial yard of pace and has become the weak link in this United team, exploited by opposing wingers endowed with even a lick of speed. The only reason he has retained his spot in the starting XI is because he has had no natural heir, with failed bids being made for Leighton Baines and Fabio Coentrao over the summer. Except there is a player who could arguably succeed the Frenchman - Alexander Büttner, signed by Ferguson last year but largely overlooked by Moyes. The 24-year-old made only his second start of the season last night in the 4-0 win over Norwich City in the Capital One Cup fourth round, and impressed not only in his defensive duties but also in attack. Proving that he, like Evra, can contribute at the opposite end of the pitch, the Netherlands international teed up Javier Hernandez for United's second goal of the game. And he should be given more opportunities to prove that there is life after the Frenchman.
