Man Utd: David Moyes Secures Wayne Rooney's future?

After a summer of speculation, Manchester United boss David Moyes has explained that there are no immediate plans to force Wayne Rooney into a midfield role. The Englishman was made to sit behind Robin van Persie for the majority of last year's campaign, a decision that caused tension between Rooney and former boss Sir Alex Ferguson and led to Rooney's alleged second transfer request in three years. On the eve of Moyes' first Champions League game at his new club, when asked whether he would follow Ferguson decision to place Rooney in midfield, he responded: "Not just now. I can only see Wayne playing up top and playing as a forward for us. I don't have a goals target for him. But his targets have been big in recent years." The 27-year-old was highly criticsed by supporters last year as he managed to score just 12 Premier League goals, compared to Van Persie's 26 goal tally. Moyes looks set to play Rooney and Van Persie along side each other more often but did admit that the United number 10's talents go beyond just a striker: "We will try and get him up there. But Wayne's game is a little bit more. He has developed into one of those centre-forwards who drops into spaces to pick the ball up," said Moyes. "He plays in a slightly different way so you have to appreciate him for what he does and his style of play. That's what he is." Rooney scored a free-kick in United's 2-0 home win over Crystal Palace on Saturday, a moment which meant a lot to the Old Trafford crowd. It remains unclear whether Rooney will extend his stay at the Premier League champions, but with Moyes now looking to give the front-man his freedom on the pitch once more, the striker may find himself becoming happier with life in Manchester.
