2. New Teammate Benefiting The Attack
The purchase of Marouane Fellaini is likely to benefit United's attacking players. Nani's defensive capabilities have never been his strongest asset. United are now likely to set up with two holding players in Fellaini and Carrick and Nani is one of a trio of players who will be freed to play further up the pitch and concentrate on creating chances. Nani may be seen by many as a luxury player, someone with the ability to win a game from nowhere, but he can also go missing in action for 80 minutes. Fellaini's presence will help to hold the balance of the team together, as he is capable of covering for Nani's defensive frailties and provide the midfield platform needed to accommodate the mercurial winger. The formation of four attackers supported by two defensively minded midfielders is one that is used by top teams throughout Europe; this subtle change in United's formation could reap benefits in European competition. Nani has endured mixed fortunes in the competition; many will recall his goals aginast Bayern Munich in the
2009/10 competition but equally there was his harsh dismissal against Madrid last season. A change in formation will ensure United are not over run in the midfield area and the players can focus on utilising the skills of Nani et al. instead of being restricted to a game of containment.
