Man Utd New Manager - 5 Things Louis van Gaal Must Do To Be Considered A Success

4. Replace The Old Guard

Van Gaal will be tasked with a major rebuilding job this summer with the confirmed departures of centre-back duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand meaning extensive reconstructive surgery is required on the squad. The loss of Vidic, who captained the side, will likely be felt more keenly than Ferdinand's exit, but both have been inspirational and at times invaluable members of the United side - and van Gaal has to get their replacements spot on. He cannot rely on Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones to replace one or both, as the trio are inexperienced, inconsistent and have each been blighted by injury recently. World class replacements are needed, with Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels and Nevan Subotic and Benfica's Ezequiel Garay being tipped to join this summer. All three would be quality purchases, have achieved success at their respective clubs and have the experience necessary to step into Vidic and Ferdinand's boots. And van Gaal's ability to tie up a deal for at least one of these stars will factor into whether he is considered a success or not.
