Man Utd Transfers: 10 Deals Van Gaal Still Needs To Complete
5. Nigel De Jong
Despite the number of available options in attacking midfield - and presumably wing-back if Van Gaal plans to double up roles for some wide men - the options in central midfield are severely limited. At the minute, with Michael Carrick out injured, United have only Darren Fletcher and Ander Herrera available, so it is plainly obvious that Van Gaal needs more men in. That thinking is clearly the reason United have been linked with so many central midfielders, and why it isn't unfeasible that more than one will come in before the transfer window closes. Of the available options, former City player De Jong is probably the more affordable - and considering his much money the club have already spent this summer that is surely music to their ears - with AC Milan in financial trouble. He's experienced, tough-tackling and hard, and though he comes with something of a reputation, he would be the steely addition to United's midfield that Van Gaal currently needs.
