Man Utd Transfers: 10 Former Players Van Gaal Must Bring With Him

7. Patrick Kluivert - Holland, Coach

Though a potential move to United has been nixed by Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad in the past couple of days, the first rumours of Van Gaal's impending appointment at United included news that he would bring his fellow Dutchman and current Holland coach Patrick Kluivert with him to Old Trafford. Since Ryan Giggs successfully guided Manchester United to two victories in his three games in charge his stock has risen, and there is a feeling that United's most decorated player might well secure the assistant manager's role under Van Gaal. Though this is obviously a romantic decision, Van Gaal should be keen to retain some of the coaching team that have worked for him in Holland: there is historical precedent to suggest that not bringing some influence into your own coaching set-up can be a problem, and the last thing Van Gaal wants is the presence of Giggs becoming the Johhny Giles to his Brian Clough (at least in the universe painted in The Damned United) - sitting uncomfortably with the king elect on his shoulder. Adding a mix of his former coaches, including Kluivert to his new set-up would be a smart way to immediately stamp his authority and reinforce his position, and though there should be a significant role for the Class of '92, and Giggs might well be a smart morale-boosting choice as assistant, having a First Team Coach like Kluivert would be as strong a play.
