Man Utd Transfers: 10 Former Players Van Gaal Must Bring With Him
8. Bastian Schweinsteiger - Bayern Munich
Though the defensive midfielder might still be smarting somewhat from his depiction by English newspapers in the wake of his Champions League sending off against United earlier this season (and their punning labelling of him as a pig) he would be a natural addition to the Premier League. Having apparently been close to a move to Newcastle United when out of favour at Bayern, Schweinsteiger flourished under the coaching of Van Gaal at Bayern, becoming one of the manager's protegees, despite his having been at the club for 7 years before the manager took over. That status is thanks to Van Gaal's reinvention of the one time winger, who he didn't think was suited to the wing, Schweinsteiger's career was rejuvenated, as he flourished in the new position. United clearly need a new defensive player with Michael Carrick advancing in years and Fletcher still not the player he was before his illness, and though he is soon to be 30, Schweinsteiger would fit the model of exactly the kind of player United need.
