Man Utd Transfers: 10 Former Players Van Gaal Must Bring With Him
6. Holger Badstuber - Bayern Munich
Though he has been out injured since December 2012, the German stopper, who Van Gaal blooded in the Bayern first-team back in 2009 along with Thomas Muller would still be a gamble worth taking. He has found himself linked with a move to Juventus this summer, with the expectation that he will be able to return to first team football next season, but United would do well to monitor the situation, particularly with Bayern apparently looking to offload players to rebuild. Since making his debut under Van Gaal, Badstuber has been a regular for Bayern - injuries aside - alternating at times between his natural centre-back position and the left-back berth where he is comfortable, and though there is history between the two, United need imposing defenders to plug the gap left by Nemanja Vidic. Throughout the disappointing 201011 season with Bayern, Badstuber and Van Gaal has a public break-down in their relationship after the manager openly and strongly criticised him after a number of poor performances, and dropped him a number of times. But the German should be big enough and strong enough to recognise the opportunity to go to United and become part of the strong foundation that re-announces them as a title challenger. He's very much in the commanding mould of a Vidic type player at a powerful 6'3, and though some concerns might remains on the injury front, he would be a great capture if he can stay fit.
