5. Robert Lewandowski
Club: Dortmund Position: Striker Value: £25m A player linked to United for almost the entirety of the summer transfer window, Lewandowski has been scouted this season by Sir Alex and his assistant Mike Phelan, and his current club Dortmund are said to be aware of United's interest in signing one of their star assets. Dortmund rejected the possibility of selling the player to United in the summer for around20million before Sir Alex paid £22m for Robin Van Persie, but United should go back in for the Pole, who would add extra dimensions to the United front-line. His ability to play in a number of positions is seen as key factor in his appeal to Sir Alex, who is said to be increasingly interested in versatile players. The player who has scored 31 goals in 72 games, and has apparently made it clear that he will not sign an extension on his current deal, which ends in June 2014, so United could well profit from Dortmund's business model, which has a limit of paying huge wages. Lewandowski could offer a replacement to the unfancied Nani out wide, as well as competition through the middle, and a likely high price would be justified in his versatility and the attacking threat his signing would bring to the United team.
