Man Utd Transfers: 10 Signings Louis Van Gaal Should Have Made

2. Marco Reus

Another winger who would have improved Louis van Gaal's options in the wide areas is Maro Reus. The Borussia Dortmund ace enjoyed a tremendous individual season in 2013-14, scoring 16 Bundesliga goals from 30 appearances. He also finished as the highest assist maker in Germany after setting up his teammates 14 times, and would have added a much-needed injection of creativity to a lethargic United midfield. The 25-year-old's performances saw him named Dortmund's Player of the Year last season and earned the attention of both United and their Premier League rivals Arsenal. But as with so many other players on this list, the Red Devils failed to make their interest concrete and the starlet stayed in Germany, despite the Reds having a golden opportunity to sign him. United allowed Shinji Kagawa to return to Dortmund this summer after just two seasons at Old Trafford and, when they were locked in discussions with the German outfit for the Japanese international to leave, they could have requested that Reus be included as part of any deal. This was another missed opportunity that van Gaal and Ed Woodward really should have capitalised on.
