Man Utd Transfers: 9 Sub-Par Players Who Need To Be Sold
3. Rio Ferdinand
When this season ends Rio Ferdinand will have been at the club for 12 years, picking up a league title in half of those campaigns as well as the Champions League. Like Giggs, he'll be fondly remembered. Like Giggs, he should also call time. He could continue playing at another club but it is more likely that he would retire, as was being reported in the latter stages of 2013. Time catches up with everyone and the central defender is no exception, which has become evident this season. He's been at the heart of United's defensive frailties this year and his ageing body has shown time after time. It's no real criticism, as this is expected and will happen to everyone but it does show a problem at United. He shouldn't be getting played. It's more his name, rather than his form, that gets him into the Manchester United side. It shouldn't be that way for anyone. Selections should be based on form and performances, not memories. Do you think Pele would be able to complete 90 minutes to a full standard now? Ferdinand is no Pele but you don't expect him to be. United simply don't need him, the other central defenders at the club put in a much better showing. Vidic can take control of the defence in his absence, while Jonny Evans is proving to be a really promising player and looks to have a great career ahead of him. Ferdinand in the side takes up a place that can be given to a younger player, also a better player which is the deciding factor. United shouldn't be sticking by their man here, he's done enough. Let him retire, or even move to a lower club. Either way is good for United.
