8. Dwight Yorke (Trinidad And Tobago)
Sir Alex Fergusons transfer dealings have raised a few eyebrows in the past, particularly his tendency to sign unknown players for significant sums of money, which havent always paid off. Trinidadian Dwight Yorke wasnt unknown when he signed for United, having spent nine years at Aston Villa, but many thought that the Smiling Assassin, as he came to be known, was somewhat overpriced, given the £12.6 million price tag that he came with. Any doubts were soon crushed when the striker began to form a formidable partnership with Andy Cole, who had fallen out of favour at the club before Yorkes arrival. Between them, the two scored 53 goals between them on Uniteds route to Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League glory in the 1998/99 season, with Yorke responsible for 29 of them. His celebrity soon began to affect his game, however, and he became known in the press more for his relationship with glamour model Katie Price than his performances on the pitch, despite remaining a reliable goalscorer. Finding himself displaced in the team by a resurgent Teddy Sheringham in 2000, the striker soon found began to occupy a fringe role, and moved to Blackburn Rovers in 2002. Like Stam before him, however, Yorke has returned to the club in another capacity, becoming an assistant coach for the reserve team in 2011. All in all, he made 95 league appearances for the club, scoring 47 goals, and despite falling out of favour in his later years, will always be remembered at Old Trafford for his contributions to the greatest season in the clubs history.
