Man Utd: What Is Sir Alex's Best Formation?

3.5-3-2

De Gea Smalling Ferdinand Vidic Valencia Evra Jones Kagawa Cleverley Rooney Van Persie Verdict: My favourite out of all the formations. The reason being is that I believe it would utilise all of United's strength, whilst also encorporating the element of attack that United fans are so used to. The use of a back line that consists of three central defenders may seem rather odd to fans, however the use of a defensive foil in front of them in terms of either Jones or Carrick gives the team a more comfortable look to it, and would also allow Ferguson to deploy attacking full-backs. On the left-hand side, Evra and Buttner are more than capable to play as attacking full-backs, yet we have to have seen if Buttner is as useful defensively as he is going forward. On the right, Rafael or Valencia would be equally as effective, however I have plumped for Valencia due to his fitness and pace that would be useful in this position. In the middle of the park are a number of players to choose from, however I decided to go with Kagawa and Cleverley due to their attacking intent. Kagawa because of his clever runs and his ability to find a pass through defences, and Cleverley due to his tenacity and willingness to work for the team. My preferred line-up would always feature one of the two, yet Anderson or Giggs could be used instead of Kagawa, and Fletcher or Scholes for Cleverley. Up front is again a tough decision as I think Rooney and Welbeck were forging a fantastic partnership last season, however, Welbeck's scoring record counts against him here, as Rooney and Van Persie were the Premier League's top two scorers in the 2011/12 season.
