Man Utd: Who Is United's Most Valuable Player?

2. Wayne Rooney

Critics tend to come flying towards the England international when he doesn't bang in 30+ goals in a season. This season, however, has seen a Rooney that we haven't seen since the days of Van Nistlerooy and Saha, a Rooney that is free of the 'main goalscorer' label. With RVP banging them in on a regular basis, Rooney has been given license to drop dipper into the pockets of space between the midfield and defense. His work-rate remains phenomenal, which makes him one of the most selfless players in the entire league. He will be back defending one minute, then leading the line of a counter attack the next. Although this season hasn't seen him as United's top-scorer, it has seen him become their top assist-maker. It's this type of 'for-the-team' attitude, which has seen Rooney become a vital component in the Championship-chasing Man Utd side. The fact that he was dropped for the Madrid return leg has raised questions about his continued importance to the team and his future in the side, but one thing people must understand about his limited involvement is the fact that Ferguson had to employ the perfect tactics to counter the threat that the Madrid team posed. The truth is Ferguson got his tactics spot on but this doesn€™t show that Rooney is no longer an important first team player, but it shows that even the world€™s best can€™t fit into every single tactical strategy employed by a manager. Kagawa scored a terrific hat-trick at the weekend, yet he didn€™t get on at all. The strength and depth of this United side is there for all to see when United can name a bench with Valencia, Young, Kagawa, Chicharito and Rooney himself against the reigning La Liga champions. The fact of the matter is that Rooney has given 110% for the cause this season and has usually impress supporters and pundits alike, and for this reason he should still be considered as one of United's key men. MVP Score: 9.3/10
